So, it's been a while since anyone used this but it sure seems like an effective means of communication so I thought I'd clean out the internet cobwebs and give it a try.

First, Jamie and I are hard at work planning events for the upcoming year. Orientation is coming together and we've already penciled in August 31st as the date of the rooftop social in the library. We're also in the initial stages of planning colloquia and other social activities for the graduate student community. Ideas are greatly appreciated so feel free to post any thoughts below.

While we plan these events, we also are working on the crucial issues that impact the lives of graduate students such as better health care, better pay and job placement. We are also trying to expand research opportunities and the profile of graduate students in the greater Fordham community.

Friday, February 26

Graduate students are invited to

submit abstracts for papers on

any interdisciplinary topic

(e.g. a paper you are preparing for a conference, a final paper you wrote for a class, a summary of a dissertation chapter, writing samples from your grad school application etc., which could be of interest to people in departments other than your own)

gain valuable presentation experience
get feedback on your work from other graduate students in a supportive environment
first-year students are encouraged to submit, as well as advanced students

Papers must have 25-minute reading time (about 10-12 pages double-spaced)

Call For Papers

This year’s one-day Graduate English Association conference to be held on February 12, 2010 asks presenters to engage the interconnections amongst sex, death, and boredom and to challenge conventional definitions of each.

Each panel will consist of three, possibly four short ten-minute presentations followed by a twenty or thirty minute discussion amongst panelists, conference attendees, and a moderator.

In addition to traditional academic papers, the committee encourages creative literary work, performance art, and multimedia presentations.

The deadline for submissions is December 12, 2009 .

“Gender Studies & Queer Theory”

From the popularity of Lady Gaga and our fascination with Michael Jackson to the passing of California's Preposition 8 and the Miss America controversy last year, gender politics and sexuality have proven to be truly timely topics. As American identity becomes increasingly global and pluralistic, so too do categories of gender, sex, and sexual preference; we recognize this plurality in various forms of popular culture and media, including films like Milk and Brokeback Mountain , as well as daily talk shows on sex-change operations. Whether through political debates about the sanctity of marriage, the creation of transsexual student groups on campus, and/or the popularity of Queer Studies, identity politics continue to fascinate us all. As scholars, teachers, thinkers, etc., how can we position ourselves in relation to these timely topics? How do sexual politics influence our world, from daily interactions to college classroom discussions? To what extend does gender seem socially crafted, culturally contracted, and/or a performance?

This interdisciplinary panel, entitled "Gender Studies & Queer Theory" , explores the scientific, psychological, philosophical, literary, historical, and economic aspects of gay culture, sexual identity, and gender distinctions (or lack thereof).

We welcome scholarly papers, presentations, talks, etc. that explore ideas about gender, sexuality, sexual preference, and/or any other aspect of identity politics that you find helpful to this discussion.

Some Potential Topics:

1.) What is gender?

2.) Homosexuality and the Catholic tradition

3.) Gender and public discourse/religious identity/civic responsibility/family values

4.) Feminism and embodiment

5.) Queer realities of transgender and intersex

6.) Queer Approaches to Literature

7.) Transsexuality on Campus

8.) A Psychological History of Homosexuality

9.) Identity Politics on Television, in Film, etc.

10.) Representations of Gays in Art and Music

11.) Gays in Corporate America (Think: Tom Hanks in Philadelphia)

12.) Historical studies of the relationship between the sciences and feminist thought

13.) Discussions of the role of the sciences/humanities in supporting modes of thought that perpetuate bad practices

14.) Discussions of the sciences’/humanitites’ emancipatory potential for women and others

“Green/Eco Something”

Whether through images of upscale eco-friendly apartment complexes in Manhattan, advertisements for organic produce at Whole Foods, sound-bites of the presidential candidates debating global warming, or simply the reality of escalating gas prices, we are reminded constantly of local and global efforts to create greener pastures. As scholars, teachers, and thinkers, how can we position ourselves in relation to this green revolution? Since when have these ecological issues become social, political, and cultural concerns? Should ethical debates, or even government actions, play a role in responding to environmental happenings, which, some would say, are solely scientific phenomena? This interdisciplinary panel, entitled “Green/Eco Something,” explores the scientific, psychological, philosophical, literary, historical, and economic aspects of the greening phenomenon. We welcome scholarly papers, presentations, talks, etc. responding to these environmental questions, ecological concerns, and green debates.

Consider submitting a paper for the next meeting of the Interdisciplinary Graduate Colloquia series, to be held Friday, April 4 on the topic "The Body." Abstracts are due by Tuesday, March 25 to intergradcolloquium@gmail.com . Colloquia are an informal way to present new or developing research and receive feedback from peers in a variety of disciplines. Plus, there will be wine and cheese!

The body may rightly be understood as the center of cultural, ethical, and aesthetic discourses, contributing explicitly and implicitly to our constructs of race, economy, law, desire, nationhood, textuality, and language. How do bodies and/or their materiality figure into these discourses? How can we “flesh out” the body and the texts that theorize or engage with it? How do bodies interact with each other and the world? How do they interact with that which is internal, that is with some kind of notion of spirit or soul?

The Center for Medieval Studies runs a fabulous workshop on teaching strategies. Although it is primarily of interest for people who will be teaching in areas of medieval studies in the future, they also are very good for teaching strategies and ideas in general. They are all highly recommended.

A few changes that the GSA has made this semester:

(1) GSA Travel Grant Awards

In addition to those who present papers or posters, the $400 annual GSA travel grant awards will now be eligible to students who travel to academic conferences for the purposes of job interviews. Supporting documentation is required. This change takes effect retroactively to include any interview in the 2007-08 academic year. For more information, see here .

(2) GSA Council Meeting Schedule

GSA Council meetings have always have been open to all Fordham GSAS graduate students; however, because of varying schedules of the meetings, students often did not know the dates and locations of GSA Council meetings. To address this, we have instituted regularly scheduled Council meetings. The schedule for the Spring semester is:

Mon. Mar. 31 – 11:30 - 12:45

Transnationalism

According to the University of Chicago’s Transnationalism Project, “Transnational flows of capital, people, information and images are transforming our worlds; they are also challenging researchers to develop new theoretical and methodological practices to study and account for them” (http://transnationalism.uchicago.edu). A recent buzz-word among scholars in the humanities and social sciences alike, transnationalism incorporates ideas regarding globalization, migration, cosmopolitanism, multiculturalism, race and gender theories, and postcolonialism. It can be conceived “as a social morphology, as a type of consciousness, as a mode of political reproduction, as an avenue of capital, as a site of political engagement, and as a reconstruction of ‘place’ or locality”[1]

We are soliciting papers for an interdisciplinary panel, to be held Friday, February 1, 2008 at 4:30 pm, location TBA, which engage with differently and broadly-conceived notions of transnationalism. We particularly encourage papers that are conscious of, and perhaps even spend some time discussing, their theoretical and methodological procedures, with the hope of contributing to the larger scholarly conversation regarding how we might approach this evolving concept.

Please submit abstracts of no more than 300 words to intergradcolloquium@gmail.com by Friday, January 25. This is a great opportunity to receive peer feedback on papers written for fall semester classes, so please interpret this topic as broadly as you like.

Philosophy Grad Discussion Group

Richard Atkins of the Philosophy Dept. will be presenting some of his research at the next meeting of the Philosophy Grad Discussion group. The title of his talk is "Broadening Perceptual Normativity."

His blurb on the talk:

The discussion of perceptual normativity has focused on two interrelated issues. The first is perceptual veridicality, the claim that a perception is "good" if and only if it is of the way the object in fact is. The second is perceptual entitlement, which holds that a perception is "good" only if it entitles the perceiver to make true judgments. I argue that these claims constitute an aenemic theory of perceptual normativity because they fail to take into account the variety of aims we have in perceiving. Once we do so, we find that the first claim is false. Moreover, for the second claim to be non-trivial it must be supported by a broader theory of perceptual success.

The GSA will be co-sponsoring a day of Native Tree Planting in the Bronx River Forest with the Bronx Neighborhood Initiatives and Development Corporation (NIDC) on Saturday, Nov. 17 from 10am - 1pm.

Come learn about recent changes in our local natural areas and plant young trees to restore the balance of nature. All graduate students are encouraged to participate. Transportation will be provided.

GSAS Insurance Discount:

Students who have not received their insurance discount and are on scholarships with the exception of tuition scholarship only students, should be aware that the Office of Academic Programs & Support (i.e. Lydia and Jenn Latham's Office) will be requesting the next batch of $400 insurance discount by November 7. If anyone is interested you will need to submit a copy of their bill or a copy of their insurance card to this office (Keating 216/217) by November 7, 2007. Those who have already submitted their copy, they don't need to do anything.

Please note: the insurance discount is a one time stipend for the academic year.

The GSA would like to announce a new initiative for graduate student research: The GSA Working Group Committee.

These groups aim at fostering interdisciplinary graduate-level research on topics which draw from a number of disciplines.

This fall, three Working Groups are being developed: Ethics, Medieval Thought and Society, and Phenomenological Psychology. Descriptions are available below.

If interested in joining a Working Group, please contact Gary Gabor, Vice President of the GSA, at gsa@fordham.edu . In addition, students who wish to propose new Working Groups are encouraged to contact the GSA.

Working Groups Descriptions

Ethics

The Ethics Working Group promotes the collaborative study of theoretical and applied ethical issues in an interdisciplinary setting. Topics are determined by the interests of the group; potential areas include bio-ethics, environmental ethics, issues of social justice, science and technology, and professional ethics. All departments are encouraged to join.

Medieval Thought and Society

The Medieval Thought and Society Working Group utilizes interdisciplinary cooperation to engage medieval worldviews across number of spheres including intellectual, religious, and political thought. Specific topics will be chosen by the group, but the underlying theme will be to explore the connections between medieval thought and its manifestation in medieval society.

Phenomelogical Psychology

The Phenomelogical Psychology Working Group fosters an appreciation for Qualitative Methods in the Social Sciences (Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology, etc.) through exploring the philosophical roots of psychological concepts and methods. Husserl, Heidegger, Sartre, Levinas, and Merleau Ponty are just a few of the philosophers discussed. The forum affords students exposure to deep philosophical thinkers and ideologies and encourages students to brainstorm in a meeting of the minds framework; whereby students from a variety of disciplines share their expertise in various forms of methodology and analysis.

Jazz it Up! - Concert Series
